  • My handheld journey recently (as in post vita) includes the following devices. Switch, Anbernic RG35, AYN Odin, Switch OLED, GCloud, Steamdeck OLED.

Steamdeck is the most comfortable of these. I’ve also tried many others but don’t own them so I won’t speak for them.

As for controllers in general my favorite is PS5 controllers, then the steamdeck.

I can play long hours but not as long as I did with the switch because of the ability to remove the controllers and play in desktop mode. I guess I can do the same with a PS5 controller on the steamdeck. Will just need to get a kickstand.

  • Father of 4 here. First deck on the way but I got back into handhelds a couple of years ago when I went in for surgery to remove cancer. My brother got me a retro handheld the size of a gameboy and I had no idea these were a thing. I had a switch but didn’t play it much as it was something the kids used. Since then I’ve bought several other handhelds (AYN Odin and GCloud to name a few) and with each I have been satisfied. I didn’t go for the LCD version because I didn’t like the LCD when my brother showed it to me and the UI felt clunky to me.

Since then there have been many updates to the OS and obviously a new OLED model. I can’t wait.

Handhelds allow me to play my consoles remotely while the kids are using the tv they are set up on. They also have helped to not separate the wife and I into different rooms. While she watches TV I’m right there next to her on the handheld. Seriously… it’s a blessing. She used to complain whenever I did play…now it’s no problem.

That’s the quality of life improvements. Apart from that is the nostalgia. As a child I used to play during Christmas break non-stop. Every Christmas/Thanksgiving now I get the bug to want to play a game. It also reminds me of when I used to play my gameboy or my siblings’ lynx or game gear.
