They’re a better indicator of how good someone is versus their ATP ranking. Rank is solely a function of performance in tournaments irrespective of the quality of opponents you play and how well you perform against them. Thus with rank you get people like Ruud who coast to slam finals without playing anyone and end up #2 in the world whereas their Elo is still in the teens and more predictive of how they’d fare head-to-head with another like player
Really impressed with Banchero. Looking like the Magic hit the jackpot with their #1 pick decision.
For such a blatant one like this it should honestly be a 5+ game suspension. That would end this shit in a week
There are a shitton of Russians and Russian sympathizers on this sub
Is that a lot or a little?
I think Fritz will fall out of the top 10 for good. I think he’s hit his high water mark for his career.
If he stays healthy (big “if”), I think Seb Korda will get into the top 10.
Yeah that was an amazing breakthrough. But he was the favorite at RG and kinda blew it. He had a losing record against Sinner and Djokovic in 2023.
His season was amazing, no question, but it was much better than the previous one.
What’s your context for saying a 3 percentage-point increase is “a lot?” Djokovic from his first full season (2005) to his second (2006) jumped from 50% win rate to 69%. Then the next year (2007) up to 78%. That’s a lot of change.
A 3 percentage-point change is probably less than the standard deviation from year to year for a player who has effectively plateaued. Since 2011 when Djokovic broke through, the standard deviation of his win rate through 2023 is 4.35. That means his win rate just “randomly” changes by over 4 percentage points every year. Rafa’s standard deviation since 2005 to 2022 is over 5.
Your win rate changing 3 percentage points doesn’t mean jack all.
You mean World #29 Felix Auger Aliassime?
He needs to improve this off-season. He didn’t make a marked jump from 2022 to 2023
This. If we’re comparing him against all age-20 seasons in the Open Era, his season was legendary.
If we’re comparing him against his own age-19 season, he didn’t really improve. He basically had the same season. One slam, two Masters, two 500s in both seasons. He won 84% of his matches this season and 81% last season.
Nice. Put Rune in there, too. His numbers by this age are more impressive than Meddy, Sinner, and Federer
Coming into the ATP Finals, Rune had a 50% career winning percentage against the Top 10, which is better than all active players except the Big 4, Carlos, and Meddy. Sinner was below 40% by contrast.
Until the past couple months I would’ve pegged Rune to win a slam before Sinner. He was 2-0 in the H2H and still has a better record against top players.
He was young and top 10 at a time
He still can’t buy a beer in the U.S., and he has more grand slams than any active players outside the Big 4 and Stan
