The first question is, if the Bears move on from fields, does any team want him as a starter?
I know I don’t want him as the Raiders starter. That said, at his salary ($3.2M next year, then a FA after that), I personally wouldn’t be mad about trading for Fields as a 1 year rental as O’Connell’s backup, I actually kind of like having a more mobile QB as the backup, but I certainly would not give up a 2nd round pick.
Let’s not forget that the Vikings’ skill players aren’t much to speak of when Jefferson is out, especially when Hockenson is less than 100%.
Before folks jump to conclusions about what this article says about the Raiders, allow me to summarize the article’s contents:
It closed with brief comments by Gannon on each of the “backups” that are currently starting. I put “backups” in quotes because of the 8, 2 of them have won the job over former-starters that are now healthy, and thus are really starters now: Will Levis and Aidan O’Connell. Gannon’s comments on these two particular QBs were contrasting and interesting:
Levis: “He’s one of these guys that when you’re the youngest kid in the neighborhood he wants to challenge all the kids to see how far he can throw it, he’s that guy. The accuracy and the decision-making and the lack of experience is a problem.”
O’Connell: “He’s got a lot of the intangibles you like — he’s poised, he’s comfortable in the pocket, he’s got good feet, good mechanics, he makes all the throws, he doesn’t get rattled, when he makes a mistake he’s able to quickly turn the page and come back. I think that kid’s got a chance.”
Of the 8 backups currently starting that article focuses on, only 2 of them have won the job from a former starter that is now healthy: Levis and O’Connell.
Interesting to read Gannon’s comments on those two, especially in the context about his non-player-specific comments that the article featured, which are mostly about the importance of understanding protections:
Levis: “He’s one of these guys that when you’re the youngest kid in the neighborhood he wants to challenge all the kids to see how far he can throw it, he’s that guy. The accuracy and the decision-making and the lack of experience is a problem.”
O’Connell: “He’s got a lot of the intangibles you like — he’s poised, he’s comfortable in the pocket, he’s got good feet, good mechanics, he makes all the throws, he doesn’t get rattled, when he makes a mistake he’s able to quickly turn the page and come back. I think that kid’s got a chance.”
*raiders proceed to tie the next game*
He started 3 years in college and high school combined. By no means do I think he’s already close to his potential either mentally or physically. Totally different mindset and development track than Carr imo.
I wonder how the Pierce regime would have been received by Raider Nation if those Miami and KC games were their first two games.
Had to choose between Dobbs and DTR in fantasy this weekend; I chose poorly.
Been watching all their games and I agree. I suspect he’s playing through an injury.
I think Penix is the best QB in college right now but his age has most people concerned
Several these guys have been in college for a long time, in part because of Covid
Nix is 23.8 years old Penix is 23.5 Daniels is 22.9
Williams and especially Maye and McCarthy are younger
Cool. So we won then, right?
What’s important isn’t to have a QB who can rush for 500 yards. What’s important is to have a QB who can avoid sacks, extend plays, and run in short yardage. Carr, Garoppolo, and O’Connell all lack that, which has made it difficult for our offense to be consistent week to week. One pass rusher beats his man and they go down too easily.
There’s more than one way to skin a cat
Vikings have a bye too
Saw a stat last week that Allen actually had more turnovers than turnover-worthy plays
Who are our 3rd/4th DEs behind Koonce and Wilson this weekend?
I’m not so excited to watch the defense without Maxx
This game should have been first team to 3 wins
The call on the hit on Mahomes when he was inbounds was bad enough, but that call where they ruled the KC ballcarrier out of bounds with 19 seconds was also insane, dude was getting pushed backwards, that’s forward progress in bounds every time. I have never seen a ref make that call. And the clock situation was critical there. Could have easily cost GB the game.
