This is an attempt to learn and hear everyones thoughts so please be kind, even though I seem like a dummy. :)

What are your thoughts on what Philly will do to Travis Kelce to cover him? Now, I haven’t watched the games again, but it seemed the Dolphins and Broncos both double and triple teamed Travis- Rich Risen said Miami was “mauling” him - which forces Pat to attempt throws to the other receivers, who can’t be trusted not to eff it up. Is this what teams have figured out they need to do to eliminate 87 as a threat? He had low production those last 2 games. Is this worrisome at all?

I welcome as detailed as answers as possible…

    As an Eagles’ fan:

What I WANT to see happen: Double-cover him at all times, with CB1 or CB2 and a LB or safety. Bradberry hasn’t been playing well this year, but he’s at least a bigger corner.

What will likely ACTUALLY happen: They will do a lot of different things, including some single coverage. And they won’t stick CB1 / CB2 on him. Which unfortunately means there will be times it’s Kelce against some terrible linebacker or rookie safety or 4th string slot CB. And Mahomes will find him repeatedly.

I would be SHOCKED if Kelce isn’t over 100 yards this game, tbh. Kelce is a unique talent that just happens to excel in the Eagles’ weakest area.

Best odds for the Eagles are if, unlike in the SB, they can get consistent pressure on Mahomes. Even if they do, I STILL think he’ll get his. I just think that may be the difference between him being perfect and him making a few mistakes.

If they’re putting 2 or 3 sets of eyes on Kelce, not only should our WRs have a much easier time getting open, but also Pat should be able to gash them on the ground a good handful of times and force them to true up a bit.

I’d love love LOVE to see a couple of deep connections with one or two of our speed guys over the top. MVS is just so soft at the point of the catch that if it’s contested at all, he’s not coming down with it. Unlike when we had Tyreek and that dude may not be tall but he’s stout like a fucking fire hydrant and could just out muscle DBs. So either MVS needs to step up in that area (he probably won’t, he’s been around long enough that he is what he is) or one or two young’uns needs to graduate to big boy WR school sooner rather than later.

The Eagles so far this year are basically bad at defending the slot and all we really have are slot receivers…not saying it will be easy but this is a defensive matchup made for our offense

Eagles fan here, I come in peace.

So, there is a common feeling around covering the Eagles that this defense is the same as last years, and that you can look to how the Eagles approached it defensively last year, when that’s not the case.

The biggest change has occurred with coordinators. Obviously the new DC is Sean Desai, a Fangio disciple, and one of the rare Famgio disciples who puts his own twists on Fangio goverage/front structure marriages. He has been a far cry from Gannon last year, who came from the Mike Zimmer tree, and was famous for running a very basic shell/quarters based coverage, where very little would be obfuscated from the QB presnap, and would dare thr offense to go on long, sustained drives, or gamble that the QB and protection would hold up against that pass rush. Generally that gamble paid off last year, with the talent that the eagles had often bailing Gannon out. But while he was here, there is a reason that every top half of the league QB, other than Kirk Cousins, TORCHED that defense. They were more than willing to take what was given, especially against the middle of the field. There were obviously communication issues, and lack of adjustments to gameplanning, which was covered at length post superbowl.

Cut to today. Desai, although he may have more talent up front today, has dealt with more injuries and turnover than Gannon ever did, and yet has shown to be more flexible and willing to experiment than Gannon was. Much has been made of the Eagles pass defense, and I believe this is a 3 pronged issue.

    1. Bradberry and Slay simply have not played nearly as well as they did last year, particularly bradberry.

    2. Injuries to slot corners. When healthy, Avonte Maddox is one of the best slot corners in the league… when he’s healthy. Which is rare. The Eagles backup nickel, Zach McPherson tore his Achilles in TC, so they signed Robey-Colman, who performed well, until he too was hurt. Since then, it was mixing and matching between Bradberry, rookie Eli Ricks, who is a outside corner, and rookie Sydney Brown, who is a safety. Coleman comes back this year, so hopefully stability at nickel corner can shore up communication and coverage assignments.

    3. Run defense. Unlike last year, Jordan Davis has been largely healthy. And not coincidentally, unlike last year, the run defense has simply been… the best I’ve seen from Philly in maybe a decade. This is a combo of Davis, who is excellent at his role, Jalen Carter, the best player on the Eagles defense, who is better against the run than Hargrave was, and Desai’s front structures, which are better suited against the run than Gannon’s were. Teams abandon the run because nothing has worked.

In terms of what Desai will do to actually do, I’m not sure there is one thing. He has a tendency to throw different looks throughout a game, presumably so the offense can’t establish a consistent rhythm. Not saying it will work, that requires execution from safeties, (surprisingly good) linebackers, and Bradberry, which is just frankly not reliable. But I’d expect to see a variety of looks, between bracketing, physical play at the LOS from Bradberry, and more bracketing.

Sorry for the book. Hoping for health for both teams, and looking forward to this game. Also, appreciate how this fanbase werent douches, unlike others lmfao. Go birds.

Nice breakdown, thank you for that. Aren’t our teams so lucky to have the Kelce brothers?

Yeah, also Eagles’ fan here. I think the key for the Eagles isn’t necessarily STOPPING Kelce. It’s keeping him from dominating the game. Like, we need to do better than we did against CeeDee last week. Like, if Kelce goes 8-for-86 with no TDs or something, and we get a few pass breakups and incomplete targets in there, I consider that a win.

If Mahomes can beat us by getting big games from people like Skyy Moore and Mecole Hardman, you just have to tip your cap.
