I voted ‘no,’ but truth be told, it’s far too early to tell.

I was actually excited about him coming in because he’s been able to the kind of coach that can take a lottery team with talent and bring them up to the next level of being a playoff team.

However, even when he was signed, I thought “The Pistons will need to replace him after a few seasons to bring in a coach who can seal the deal.”

The reason I voted ‘no’ even though I think it’s too soon to tell is two fold:

    1. The money they paid him. That was FAR too much.
    2. Killian should NOT be starting. Ivey showed so much promise and talent and played at a higher level. I have no fucking clue why Killian is out there.

The second issue is holding the team back right now. I don’t know if he’s tanking under management instruction, if management has asked him to pump up Killian’s minutes to increase trade value, if Monty sees something in Killian and thinks he can develop him, or if Monty just has a personal problem with Ivy as he did with Ayton.

But Killian starting is leaving everybody with their heads scratching.

And Ivey’s numbers look worse because he’s out there often with the bench unit and not starters.

    It’s woeful rotations right now.

After finding out about his family situation and hearing him say he turned down the job initially, just for Gores to bribe him into it… it didn’t give me the best feeling about the hire. It didn’t give me confidence that we were hiring someone that looked at this awkward roster and had a vision for it.

So far it’s felt like we have a coach that’s going through the motions, and rightfully has other things on his mind(his family).

Lol damn. The man isn’t even 20 games in and we already have this being posted. He literally just took the suns (which he built from a 30 win team) to multiple deep runs into the playoffs and finals (until booker, kd, and cp3 got hurt/forgot where the rim was but still decided to Chuck shots up).

I mean… they fired Mo Cheeks half way through his first season.

The killer here is the fucking contract they gave him.

Obviously they are going to ride Monty out for at least two years.

Too early to tell… but this is NOT a good start.

This team is FAR more talented than a 2-11 start.

I honestly felt this was the wrong hire before any games were played, simply because it was clearly Gores’ decision and not Troy’s. Imo you hire a GM to be the decision maker, and put your faith in them that they know what they’re doing. When you step in and override these big decisions then not only do you remove a significant part of the GM’s agency in the whole process, you also make it more difficult to evaluate the GM because it’s not their decisions that you’re evaluating.

In other words, for me, it’s less about whether Monty is the right or wrong coach and more about the fact that the Pistons have a meddling owner who can’t stay out of his own way.

I was down to have Casey for another year to finish out his contract while we took our time with the coaching search

Can’t say right now but maaaannnn is this has been the worst case scenario you’d want from the hire
