I know a lot of people are saying “fire AG,” but let’s really look at our defense.

Our defensive line mainly has backup players, with Hutch being the only standout. McNeil and Buggs aren’t consistently good, and Buggs has some off-field problems. Anzalone is great in our linebacker group, but Barnes and Campbell are more like backups than starters. Remember, Rodrigo used to be our main linebacker last year and it’s mostly the same team this year. Cam and Kerby are the only stand-outs in our secondary, and Branch is still learning. Tracy Walker and Jerry Jacobs are normally backups and only played because Mosley and CJGJ were injured.

Despite a so-so team and injuries, AG has led them to be a top 10 defense, especially against the run game. Sure, there’s room to get better, but AG is doing a lot with the players he has. Hutch might be our only defensive player to get into the pro-bowl, unlike our offense which could have five players like Goff, Ragnow, Swell, LaPorta, and ARSB. AG needs better players, but he’s doing a great job with what he’s been given.

AG is not one of the top defensive coaches, and he hasn’t made an in game adjustment in his lifetime.

My concern with AG is that when the defense is doing poorly, he’s abysmal at in-game adjustments.

He also bad at scheming for mobile QBs. You can blame talent to an extent for this but with mobile QBs being so big in the league, he’s had plenty of chances to prove himself.

If we’re roasted by mobile QBs the rest of the season, Dan may very well pull the plug on AG.

Aidan is on pace to have a worse season than last year, I agree on pace is bullshit. But unless something changes drastically he’s not making the pro bowl

Let’s see where this defense ranks at the end of the season cause I don’t think it’ll be top 10

Cam Sutton was on the Steelers for six years, and was never one of their top 2 cornerbacks. Yet people expect him to play press man on an island against superstar wide receivers.

    This fan base is wild.

It’s way too far in either direction most of the time in here. A week ago I argued with a dude that said the Chargers defensive performance was actually good.

AG hasn’t been near bad enough to be fired, but he hasn’t been near good enough in games against tough opposition to be hailed as a top defensive coach either

The run defense this year has been phenomenal. That can’t be argued against.

The pass defense has been highly suspect at times but certain things outside of his control are hurting him too: ie losing Ceedy Duce, Moseley & James Houston, all of whom would be very helpful in covering the pass/rushing the passer, to injury. That said, it seems like the scheme works against us at times. Corners lining up 8 yards off the ball on 3rd & 4 are things that coaches should be fixing, but I’ve seen plenty all year.

The most annoying thing for me is we still don’t look like we can handle mobile QBs well. This has been a constant bugaboo for 3 straight years under his tenure.

I’m going to give him some benefit of the doubt, because if we even had one more guy that could rush the passer a bit not named Aidan, I think the pass defense looks totally different. We need to go heavy defense in the upcoming draft, hopefully with a DE or corner at pick 32.

Anyone who thinks firing AG is a solution are plain wrong. No he’s not one of the top defensive minds in football, yes I think he’s capable of running an elite defense.

This is a “chicken or the egg” argument because most of our main defensive players have not played under any DC besides Glenn.

6 of our starters have only played under AG (7 if you include Barnes as a starter)

3 have been backups/rotational players elsewhere, but won starting jobs with AG

2 have been starters under other DCs

AG has no coordinator experience, so it’s hard for me to give him the benefit of the doubt. Part of me wants to see what an established, respected DC could do with the team but I’m not calling for AG’s head just yet. His leash should be extremely short next year though. If we have more talent, he can’t keep imploding every 3 or 4 games like he’s been doing

    It can be both.

Talent is up to par yet. But he’s also the issues are also stem from communication errors and lack of adjustments. That’s a sign of coaching issues.

I dont blame all the issues on AG. But I also don’t believe he’s a particularly great DC either.

A team can have a Talent issue and a coaching issues.

Think back to Anthony Lynn. That was a offense with a lack of talent and bad coaching. When Ben came in it was a bad offense due to a lack of talent, but you could see the good coaching coming in.

Personally I’m not seeing that with Glenn. I’m not calling for him to get fired. But even last season I felt like lions should upgrade. Look at the Viking defense. They have similar level of talent and yet they have arguably been better than the lions because Flores is scheming up good plays for the lack of talent.

It’s the lack of half-time adjustments that are concerning to me, but I do think he can redeem himself in the next several games.
