I’ll expand a bit: I’ve seen folks on twitter attributing part of the team’s lack of of success to their perception that wemby has underwhelmed a bit out of the gate.
one guy talked about how in being the one of the 3 or 4 most hyped up, sure-thing prospects of all time, he should be elevating the guys around him more than he has here at the onset. I’m pretty indifferent to this idea, but I lean more toward relenting on wemby and his perceived shortcomings thusfar due to the fact that point sochan hasn’t allowed for much spacing at all, and vassell’s lack of playing with injury.
I remember after wemby’s big game in phx, one user was for a half-court system to be implemented that’d keep Victor exclusively inside the arc, hanging around the basket/post, because he believes Victor is deadliest and most capable of playing best when he’s solely down there.
Touching upon all these points (and please feel free to engage any of these points, this isn’t just about his handle), how much does ur eyebrow raise every time wemby gets pickpocketed when putting the ball on the floor around the perimeter? I understand he has to work on putting the ball lower to the ground, and that he’s nine fucking teen, but I just wanted to raise these points and this question to y’all.
How worrisome? Just a little. The kid is young and has plenty of time to improve. It’d be nice if he was perfect from the start, but expectations are just so high.
I’m far less worried about his handle than about his bad decisions and poor screen setting honestly + low energy (at times).
Dribbling is hard. Not taking dumb, off balance shots and/or being a terrible screener and playing with good effort are baseline skills.
He’s used his obvious talent and height to be successful and that’s not good enough in the NBA.
None of this is a long term concern though, I fully believe he will figure out the fundamentals of being an NBA player.
He’s 7’4 and lanky. Handle will come when his strength and positioning comes.
No concern at all.
Is he concerning ? Absolutely not.
Have his handling, shooting skills been a bit oversrated in the general discourse ? Yes they have been. But it might be relevant to remember that the most serious prospect reports leading up to the draft were reffering to his offensive game as more of a projet than anything.
Will he able to remedy ? There lies the difference between a great player and a truly generational player as he probably won’t be able to exert absolute dominance under the boards because of his naturally slender frame.
Thanks for the quick engagements yall. I’ve made a couple revisions to the body of the post in the last couple minutes to correct punctuation. Pretty sure it’s good now
He’s never gonna have a good handle at 7’4. Just way too tall and easy to rip
Even KD’s handle isn’t all that amazing and he’s 6 inches shorter. He’s just able to get to the midrange and shoot over guys and that should be Wemby’s go to in a few years
19 years old and no point guard over half the time.
“Why isn’t Wemby MVP yet?”
I’m not worried his handle. It’s incredible for a player his size. Bigger issue imo is his passing/decision making that goes along with it. Hoping to see gradual improvements there as the season goes on
He just looks scared or bullied into thinking twice about his dribbles imo could be wrong
Get off twitter. Problem solved.
Lol, can u make your own observations
What person writes a post talking about randoms on twitter
Get a life
keep Victor exclusively inside the arc, hanging around the basket/post, because he believes Victor is deadliest and most capable of playing best when he’s solely down there.
What a way to state the obvious 😄. Not sure if that user actually watches the games, but they’ve been trying to get it into Wemby down there, but the problem is that he’s basically a shooting guard in a giants body. He’s not used to the physicality and is getting muscle’d out of the paint. That whole “lob it up so he can get it” isn’t that simple because he simply doesn’t have the strength to force his way in with traditional bigs and get into position. He may be tall, but he doesn’t have the strength yet to force the issue and get inside the paint at will
Furthermore, it’s not so much his handle that’s the issue because he does just fine going downhill or shooting off the dribble; it’s his post game, where he fails to protect the ball in the post and gets trapped. This is partially why I think even with the Point Sochan experiment, he’d get better spacing with a more reliable shooter around him; maybe put Cedi or McDermott in place of Vassell while he’s out? But they’re trying to develop more players outside of just the Point Sochan experiment; given how well Champagnie played in the summer league, he deserved some more playing time because there might be something there.
Right now, this is what I’m seeing the difference between the 2 units. The starting lineup has awful spacing. The 2nd unit is more reliant on the perimeter and deep, where there’s no offensive threat in the post. In both groups, they lack aggressiveness. While the season is still young, the Spurs rank dead last in free throw attempts per game. They’re not initiating any sort contact in an attempt to get to the line whenever they have their 3rd quarter shooting slumps. I’ve noticed that a lot of the times when they’re driving into the paint, many of them fall away from the contact where they end up getting a poor shot up and miss the opportunity to get to the line
No concern whatsoever but what I’m interested now in is what kinds of criticisms lebron got in his first two years when the cavs missed the playoffs
