Night driving on windy roads (not many near me) with music blaring and windows down.

Empty road, elevation change, decreasing radius, increasing radius, on camber, off camber, blind exit, perfect sightline, mid-corner dip, mid-corner bump, view for miles, opens into meadow, exposed, walled, no guardrail, dirty, clean.

This is my favorite most of the time.

Empty desert, washboard, dry lake, jumps, whoops, articulation, ledges, rock garden, side angle, feels endless, makes you feel small, brings you closer to Earth.

85 degrees, windows down, reeling in the horizon, passing saguaros and joshua trees, dodging potholes, 97-year-old road, jet age diner, art deco filling station, dead town, bygone era.

Top down, heater on, sea salt, loved one at side, waves crashing, kites flying, wetsuits and sweatshirts, surf boards, pelicans above cliff tops, charcoal fires, sun breaking through marine layer.

Top down, AC on, bird songs, decomposing plants, flowers, canopy above, driving slowly.

These are all nice.

Depends on the mood. Although I remember after I finished restoring my first project car, first drive with it. No insurance or anything but took it around the corner and let it scream through the tunnel with all the windows open on a warm summer night. Man that’s a core memory

Track. Two hour stint at Lemons. No cops, deer, random bicycles, potholes, or texting minivan drivers. You, limits of adhesion, and every corner has a different setup due to traffic. You are trash when you get out of the car, but it’s good trash…

Street. I love the rural roads of Dutchess and Columbia county NY…twisty, bucolic rolling hills, light traffic. Gentle cruise with an occasional nice corner.

Middle of the night with the top down, when my head is full of crap. My Miata is a mental health tool

Interstate 5 in the Central Valley at around 11pm at night when there’s nobody else on the road and you have the entire freeway to yourself

Track day for me. I can drive there, change my tire pressure when I arrive (or sometimes run slicks), have a blast in track, and then drive back home. It’s sublime.

Non-destination driving. Just find a road and drive. Maybe find another road and drive some more. Some straights for speed, then some curves in the hills and mountains. And if I had to choose, give me curves/turns all day.

drifting (momentum, without pulling the ebrake). it’s like being on a Rollercoaster, but you’re controlling the direction whilst being WOT most of the time.

a close 2nd would be dune bashing, basically another WOT Rollercoaster just offroad.

in public roads though, nothing beats a scenic winding mountain pass.

Interstate/Freeway driving. It’s something so exhilarating about it. It frightens some, overwhelms some, but I’ve loved it ever since I was a small boy. It’s very relaxing as well.

Just somewhere that involves a nice scenery

Some backroads, or even just fun country roads. My MX5 has never seen the Autobahn because I think Autobahn driving is boring and that car was bought exclusively to have fun^^

I know that any fleet-leased passat can eat me in a straight line, but it’s still fun to throw the little car around, and as a bonus you get to see some nice things by not taking the fastest route A to B. I even took the country road-route when heading to a meet cross-country, staying off the Autobahn and investing 3 days each way.

Early pandemic driving. I could drive down the highway at 4pm and do 60 the whole damn time, 90 if i wanted. Before and now, at that time, doing 20 is considered a good pace. There was no traffic i LOVED it.

Variety.

I think it’s easiest to say what you don’t like.

You don’t like driving around other people that put those around them at risk. Often that is in areas of low quality drivers. Frankly, I find them in US America, particularly commuting situations in dense urban areas.

Likewise, pedestrians and other people that try to share the road such as bicyclist when they encroach your only possible pavement/tarmac areas in such a manner that you are forced to divert your intended progress. So people that walk into intersections, or even jaywalk at parts of the road that aren’t intersections; bicyclist that , they themselves don’t pay attention to the rules of the road.
