An in depth look into Yasuo and why his popularity has been destroyed by commitment to a mechanic you probably don’t understand
https://lolalytics.com/lol/yasuo/build/
He is now at 7% popularity in emerald+ and negative win rate, but has no room for buffs.
https://www.leagueofgraphs.com/champions/stats/yasuo
He used to be at 25% popularity. He is a fun 1v9 carry champion that is seemingly perfect for a popular pick, combining high damage, mobility , button mashing, a high skill cap and being conventionally attractive with plenty of skins,
So what happened?
- A large % is going to be lots of new flashy champions released since 2015, but that is still post Riven and other similar era champions have kept much better % played stats.
- People got too good at him, and riot had to start balancing around the best Yasuo players. Not a death sentence for sure, champions like lee sin survived this just fine.
BUT
Yasuo is too difficult for a reasonable league of legends champion because of one mechanic, keyblade.
Take a look at this yasuo mains post (from 5 years ago) https://www.reddit.com/r/YasuoMains/comments/96x75l/need_adviceguide_on_how_to_perfect_keyblade/
There are 10s of different combos for every situation , I just want to say, COOL THIS IS FINE .
Whenever you try and talk about Yasuo and removing this mechanic, people start thinking you want to hit ANIMATION CANCELLING, which is absolutely not the case. Yes it takes some work getting into, and some champions like Nidalee and Sylas had them removed, but this is absolutely not the problem with Yasuo.
So what is the problem?
Keyblade
It sounds simple enough, here is a guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQxXLyrSLBo
What it means however is a massive dps difference in using Yasuo’s combo intuitively - weaving autos between spells, and using this “bug” button mashing around Yasuo constantly to make him do more damage. It feels like 1000s of gold worth of attack speed it’s so big the difference. You frankly cannot play Yasuo in a competitive game without doing it, he is balanced around it and to avoid being stat checked you have to.
You might answer, durrr just git gud, practise it. But the thing is that doing this through a game in every single situation combining with all the other combos is so hard even pro midlaners pros do not consider learning Yasuo to be worth it. There have been many metas were Yasuo has been viable and seen pro play, but only a handful of pros will bring him out.
The fix
It was actually fixed for a patch as Riot was testing out removing keyblade before, Yasuo instantly became way more popular as people could actually access closer to his full strength without months in the practise tool.
You just make Yasuo like every other champion, no benefit to clicking really quickly behind his between every auto…
But I like this mechanic stop making the game too easy!
No you don’t, this mechanic is done by like 10 people in the world at a consistent level in every game. Yasuo would keep a high skill cap but just not an obnoxious skill gap gated by starcraft level clicking. Which leads me to…
IT ISN’T FUN
To play Yasuo at a level he is balanced around, you have to click hundreds of times more than a jax player. This isn’t about game knowledge, kill thresholds, combos or things that make most “difficult” champions have a high skill gap, it’s just mechanical clicking that 99.9% of yasuo “mains” don’t do properly anyway.
Why has Riot not changed this already
Community outcry, seriously. Mostly by Silver yasuo mains who think Riot would be removing simple animation cancels like w-q.
Also the “not a bug it’s a feature” was talking about yasuo’s ability to jump over walls with e on jungle camps, which was kept as a cool mechanic. Keyblade is an abomination of game design separate to this.
Ultimately if you like Yasuo at all, you should support this as removing it let’s riot actually buff him to be playable outside of grandmaster+ 1 tricks.
no way this post gets removed and other satirical posts like the one about faker is up
I love that it actually works almost perfectly without changing the original post.
It’s pretty simple bro. In high elo, the players can’t allow themselves to go 0/10 because the game is simply over before the Yasuo players can reach their powerspike.
I think this is at large Riot’s fault. If you wanna int fast to go 0/10, you get banned by the system. This just shows how bad Riot is in balancing Yasuo. The players are being held back by the own punishment system that Riot has implemented.
A big change that would help Yasuo mains out here would be if Riot would patch in that Yasuo players cannot be reported and cannot be detected by the system to risk a ban. Additionally, they should allow everyone that picks Yasuo to use the old ping system to accurately describe that they are going with the 0/10 powerspike build and to spam ping it to the allies so that they can definitely see it.
Nerf Yasuo please, ty Rito
Ain’t no way my fellow KH fans launched League and named a combo after the iconic keyblade 💀
Fr tho I knew about this combo but didn’t know it was called keyblade. I can’t tell where that comes from (I’m not sure if it’s a kingdom hearts reference… but I’m 99% sure it is). It’s not like there aren’t circular spin attacks on KH but idk, I’m interested in knowing more about why it got that nickname lol.
I don’t want to see his popularity destroyed.
I want him erased and every memory of him deleted.
Keep going Rito. Put him back in the trashcan he should have never left.
Hasagi !
TIL Yasuo is literally “broken” because Riot refused to fix him
and my gold elo ass was sitting here thinking about his being worse than Yone because of his E needing a minion wave, lmao
Fresh
i agree. Fuck being passionate about pushing the limits of what your champion can do. what, you think this is a game?
You’re laughing. Dozens of 0 micro players are getting shit on by keyblading yasuos and fast comboing rivens, and you’re laughing?
