We have MUCH better quarterback play this year.

A healthy TE1 and healthy WR2 the entire season.

Our offense is producing 334 yards/game and 21.7 points/game.

Yet last year our offense produced 330 yards/game and 19 points/game.

You could make a strong argument we are underperforming on offense with the talent we have at QB.

What is your take?

If the only change last year was giving Turner Howell, do you think Turner would have produced an extra 4 yards and 3 points a game?

Eh, last year we had Heinicke making magic happen. This year we have Howell running the plays, little magic here and there but not all the time.

This is like the best most constructive conversation i’ve ever seen on this sub.

You’re ignoring sample size and variance when making this stats comparison. Averages alone (rarely) tell the entire story.

EB has coached fewer games and the results have been inconsistent. The Bills and Giants games, where we scored very little, are having a large impact on the 2023 offensive averages per game - especially because the sample size is only 10 games.

Looking at a more complete statistical picture, it’s clear that our offense under EB has a higher ceiling than the Turner era. This is demonstrated by the number of relatively high scoring games already this year. However, we’ve also been very inconsistent with very low scoring performances (i.e. high variance).

This fits with what I think most people would say without even breaking down the stats: our offense is now more explosive but has been more inconsistent so far this year. Boom or bust

Over a larger sample size, I would hope that EB works out the consistency issues and we end the season with higher offensive averages per game.

The more challenging aspect is to separate out QB play. A great QB can make any offensive coordinator look better. Would Turner have had better stats with prime Brady under center? Of course.

Yes, nothing has shown me that this is EB-specific yet and not just a product of Sam Howell being a good QB. Even in the final game last year against Dallas, Sam played well.

Everyone is hyping up the fact that he was the OC for the Super Bowl winning Chiefs while also forgetting that he didn’t call plays there. He could still be good, but this season has not been a clear improvement warranting a promotion to head coach either here or elsewhere.

Yes, Howell is a massive improvement at QB but his current play is not the same as the beginning of the season. Growing pains are still there.

I don’t think it’s fair to compare a QB who is essentially a rookie and a brand new offense to the multiple seasons under Scott Turner

I mean he had one stinker game against buffalo, but outside of that even with growing pains, him at rookie/growing pain level has been better than Haskins/Wentz/heinicke/Allen at what they were.

Speaking of our WR2, I was expecting more from Jahan Dotson. Aside from the Philly game, he’s been pretty much a non-factor this season.

      Ya.

But this offense does not favor wide receivers.

      Spreads it around too much.

I would prefer designing up schemes to get our best players the ball more often.

Much rather Terry and Dotson get more touches than Pringle and Bates. 🤣

Even Terry is on pace for his lowest production year.

It’s wild our QB has the most passing yards in the league, nearly 3,000 yards, and Terry only has 600.

      22nd in the league.

Tua is third in the league right behind Howell, and Hill has almost 1,100 receiving yards, first in the league… Double Terry.

We need to get it to our explosive guys more.

The offense is trending up, let’s revisit this conversation when we have a complete season of stats to work with.

I think that everyone is missing the point or I am? Turner and bienime are producing similar numbers. 4 yards and a couple of points better? And a terrible defense. What am I missing here

I think earlier we were learning and it skews the stats a bit. Also this is Ebs first year with the team and sh first year so the whole offense wasn’t open until recently it seems.

Last year it was what… 2yrs in the same system? Without the buffalo blunder we easily score at least 3 more points per year and that’s pretty damn good imo. The sacks early in the year were brutal cause they often happened in the strike zone ~30yrd line and in
