Go look at Goff’s ADOT. Receivers will be running routes behind the LoS if receivers are “too deep” in this checkdown offense.

3 man rushes here and there would benefit the defense. Hutchinson and McNeill are the only ones who can get after the QB anyway, there’s probably not a huge difference in time to throw.
We have like the 30th most expensive defense by market cap. IMO we have good LBs / good secondary, and are just missing that pass rusher opposite Hutchinson, aka James Houston. The fact that 2 guys on the dline basically never generate any pressure is a much bigger problem than it seems. It means that the QB can literally just run away from any McNeill / Hutchinson pressure, because the other guys can’t even keep contain. Those extra couple seconds are the difference between successful coverage and wide open receivers, as no CB can cover for 6+ seconds reliably. The secondary’s performance is strongly correlated with how much pressure the dline generates, which is true for every team in the history of the game.
AG’s scheme has consistently engineered 1 on 1s, which for most teams would be successful. He obviously needs to adjust that in the meantime, but when Houston gets back it WILL work (potentially why he’s hesitant to make drastic changes, as they will be temporary). Ultimately it may be a good thing to add him back towards the end of the year. Only time will tell.
Seemed like it was more out of frustration than anything. He’s been jubilant in the postgame speech videos, but I’m sure that behind the scenes, he’s been pissed with how the team has been performing lately. Maybe that boiled over when he saw that things were the exact same this week?
Here’s what I think. Campbell and Holmes (as well as the players) have the utmost trust in Goff. However, it’s clear that Ben Johnson doesn’t trust him. Since the start of this season, he has gotten more and more conservative on offense. Goff is one of the highest-graded QBs on throws over 20 yards, but he rarely gets the chance to show that.
Some of the problems I have with Ben Johnson:
He hasn’t figured the Montgomery and Gibbs balance out. Gibbs is a superior player in every facet, and should be getting the majority of touches at this point in the season.
He runs the ball too much in general. This is no longer a league where you run the ball to pass it, it’s the other way around now. Basically every single game this season, the opposing defense has 9/10 players in the box for 1st and 2nd down. He doesn’t punish them enough for doing that.
He calls way too many tight formations. Goes hand in hand with point 2, because you constrict the field and allow the defense to have more players go after the QB. Goff isn’t good at navigating a crowded pocket when there are 7 rushers / 7 blockers (and that point holds true for every QB). That’s a big reason for the fumbles, there’s just too many defenders for him to account for.
8 turnovers in the last two games alone and you want to blame the defense? You sure you watched the same game?
Maybe they could start with protecting the ball. 5 turnovers today.
The league hasn’t figured out the offense. The play calling has become more and more conservative over the course of the season.
James Houston will fix a lot of problems. There’s no coincidence that his emergence last year coincided with the defense turning a corner.
The defense did a great job, this is a bad take. They had to deal with 4 turnovers (I think 3 were on the Lions’ side of the field!) and bullshit 3rd down penalties. They mostly held the Bears to FGs, and made it possible for the offense to come back. Had a ton of TFLs, too. There were some blown plays, but it was a trade-off with how aggressive they were playing.
He’s open a LOT. Now, it’s moreso up to Ben Johnson and Goff to capitalize on that. I’d like to see them try a long ball to him early in a game. The whole defense would bite on play action and it would be a walk-in TD.
Amon Ra, Sewell, Goff are probably locks (Dak and Hurts being the other two NFC QBs, nobody else is close).
Gibbs could potentially be one if he stays hot, but I think the voting closes too early for him to have a chance. Glasgow should 100000% be one, but I’d say maybe just one of the Decker/Ragnow/Glasgow will get in.
On defense, Alim, Hutchinson and Anzalone SHOULD be the ones who get in. PFF has Hutchinson at a 90.2 grade on the year, which is nuts. Not sure how NTs vs DTs are compared, but Alim may have a hard time getting in with Lawrence/Carter/Donald doing well. I ultimately see Anzalone as an alternate, just because he’s generally underrated.
The all22 would confirm it, but it really seems like he consistently generated a shit ton of separation this game. There was one play (I think it was a crossing route to Amon Ra or something) where Jamo was WIDE OPEN streaking across the field 25-30ish yards deep. Just seems to be a timing issue with him and Goff.
Watch Brodric Martin have a James Houston-esque debut.
Unironically he’s the pipedream trade. Still obviously loves Michigan, team isn’t in a good spot, Mark Davis gets out of the last two 2.5 of an expensive contract (because that team doesn’t look like it’s going to be seriously competing in 2 years’ time). It makes too much sense, which is why it won’t happen.
A lot of people don’t realize how little he’s actually played. He’s had 21 targets in his career, which is 2 more than Amon Ra had in just the Ravens game. People can’t wait to use the “bust” word ASAP because they think it makes them some kind of football genius if they end up being right.
That play calling by Minnesota was unfathomably bad. 2 goal-line rushes and a screen behind the LoS when a first down basically wins you the game.
