  • Yeah her reaction to finding out the truth was totally justified. And her scream when he just would not listen is maybe not what I would do but I’d want to. Maybe she’s just more in touch with her emotions than I am. In any case, I really get sick of the hate for her and the excuses for him. It’s like people just think it’s no big deal to expect women to be submissive or give up their right to choose their life path if you use culture as an excuse. It’s such bullshit. That used to be the culture pretty much everywhere and now it’s not in a lot of places. Nothing of value was lost.

  • India is not a monolith. Not every family expects the exact same customs, and apparently TJ’s family is especially strict. Plus he blatantly lied to her about it. And you can be collectivist all you want but when it turns into misogyny it’s not okay. Enforced gender roles are not okay. Many Indian women feel that way too.

People are free to live as traditionally as they want to but it should be a choice. And yes, I mean globally. Culture is not more important than people’s right to self-determination.

  • I do agree that she needs some help with her emotional regulation, but honestly if I was told after being lied to for however long they’ve been together that oh by the way the rest of your life is going to consist of daily servitude to my family I would do a lot more than scream. The reaction to the apartment might have been a bit much, but at the same time he truly wasn’t listening to her. Still, for stuff like that she could really use some coping skills or something.

  • Oh yeah, I’m definitely team sophie. I just think those prices are insane even for right there on the beach. But I guess if people pay them then that’s the market. Housing should be more affordable overall, but nobody needs to live on the beach.

Your rent actually doesn’t sound too bad. I’m in Florida and you can get a nice place for that, but not really too different from what you’re talking about. And you probably have higher wages than you would here.
