Turnover regression finally happened and it bit them in the ass
I would not since the trade is linked directly with the contract extension that he signed. The Russ contract is already bad and is only gonna get worse and worse as time goes on.
The offense is inching closer to playing a sustainable style of football. Russ was actually throwing the ball vertically, but there are still too many checkdowns and passes too close to the line of scrimmage.
I’m still worried about the defense in a game where they can’t generate turnovers to stop offenses. The unfortunate thing is forcing this many turnovers is highly unsustainable and they were getting gashed by a Vikings team with a backup QB and no Justin Jefferson.
The defense is gonna need to ball out because this offense can’t play catch-up
Defense gets a turnover… check
Run game is solid… check
Russ’ only completion is a checkdown… check
I’m firmly in the Russ is old, not that great and should be cut as soon as possible camp…
And even I think this is bullshit.
There’s almost an example every free agency where a player balls out against a team and then that team turns around and pays him in free agency for that very reason.
The Broncos being in cap hell would make it hard, but I can easily see him wrecking McGlinchey in passing situations and the same thing happening.
Either Wilson stinks or they aren’t giving him anything to work with, I can’t tell.
It’s kinda both. Russ is efficient and much more mobile than last year, so he is playing better. But his overall play is still at the level of a game manager and Payton is calling the offense as such with all the “One read, then check it down” designs.
The entire NFL outside of like six teams is having a mid-off and the Broncos are one of those teams. I’d still have them in the lower-middle of those teams just because this offense with Russ constantly throwing checkdowns has such a low ceiling that if the defense has even an average game, I’m not convinced they can do enough to win consistently. Case in point, the defense getting four turnovers on Buffalo and the Bills still almost winning that game because the offense only got six points off of those four turnovers.
A better QB leads Jeudy with a pass that lets him score an easy touchdown on that play. Jeudy had his man beat and Russ badly underthrew him.
Russ needs those training wheels at this point in his career, unfortunately. He’s just not the same QB physically that he used to be and his decision making is getting slower and slower. Russ made some incredible plays out of structure tonight, but he was barely escaping on those plays and was stopped on many others too.
Which is why his upcoming contract is a major problem and why the Broncos should cut him this offseason. Because Sean Payton shouldn’t have to run a training wheels offense that needs the QB to be a game manager while paying that QB the GDP of a small island nation.
As long as they do the right thing and cut Russ this offseason, I have no issue with not doing anything today.
The Collinsworth hate is officially more annoying that Collinsworth himself.
