  • Topic by the end of the year may not be a head and shoulders, way. Better, prospect than other guards in this class. But he has all the makings of a top five selection with his incredible offensive attributes. And among the guard prospects this year, he’s easily the best fit for the Spurs

I think you already did it. Pretty perfect job breaking it down OP so I won’t waste my breath, but for those who haven’t watched him much, I highly recommend you try to find some time to track down some of his videos and clips beyond just the highlights. OP mentioned Tony Parker with his comparisons and I definitely see it. But funny enough, he also reminds me of another former Spurs great in Manu ginobili and his uncanny ability to stop and start and use threat of his athleticism combined with his super high basketball IQ to keep defenders really uncomfortable and always guessing.

He’s a genuinely unbelievable player at getting to the rim and there’s really no reason to believe that won’t translate to the next level, if anything, it’ll be easy for him with increased spacing.

His playmaking is tremendous and he excels in pretty much every facet as a playmaker. That combined with his ability to get to the rim, his intelligence, and his very underrated athleticism, would make him such a great player to stick at the one alongside guys like Victor, Jeremy, Devin who thrive when they can play a bit off ball and cut to their spots. He would draw so much attention from day one and he has the vision to help get guys such easy baskets

  • I’m not that worried about his defense. I really think a lot of it is youth and some bad habits he’s picked up. Unlike someone like branham He’s a big time plus athlete with a monster wingspan. If whatever read about his work ethic is true then that combined with his physical attributes make it unlikely that he’ll always remain as a abysmal defensive player.

He may never be positive or even average, but I think there’s a lot of reason to be confident he’ll become passable which one combined with his truly transcendent level offense could make him a star

  • The thing that really frustrates me with the fan base right now as well as the sub. It’s people not being willing to at least try to understand some of the things pop is doing before they bash him, call him senile, call him overrated, and demand his head

I’m a pop truther and I’ve been frustrated myself with some of the things that have occurred to start the year. But with a sample size this small, in the early parts of a rebuild, you don’t have to agree with what pop is doing. You don’t have to think it’s the right way. You have to simply try to understand and acknowledge the logic behind it. The reasons for what he’s doing. And there are plenty of reasons

And plenty of people have no interest in trying to do that. They would much rather be hyperbolic and angry. Pop has a sense of logic behind every decision that people have deemed wrong so far. How about we wait until we have a proper sample size, and opportunities for him to make adjustments as well, in a year that was always going to be about development and furthering the rebuild, before getting so up in our feelings?

  • I’ll be honest with you. Unless Chet keeps these insane efficiency stats going all year and the thunder continue to be a top four team, which I think is possible on both fronts. But I also expect his efficiency to take a hit at some point, I still think Victor will win it. Historically, it’s a counting stats award and the guys playing in bad situations aren’t usually punished the same way they are for other awards. But we will have to see. Either way, people are being unrealistic and ridiculous and how they’re treating Victor

  • Zach Collins is absolutely bailing out opposing defenses when he decides to play as a stretch big man. I get what he does it when Victor’s on the floor. There’s very real need to create spacing given how limited the rest of the lineup is so that Vic can/and cut to the rim. But when he’s out there playing 30 ft from the basket in lineups without Victor. It’s such a shame. He’s turned into a genuinely borderline elite post scoring option that the Spurs need to utilize more in the non Victor moments until he starts showing that he’s not that guy. Because right now he most certainly is way superior as a post scoring option then as a stretch one

  • I respect your opinion but I disagree. Though it is early. I think his offensive game is going to look so so so darn good in the NBA. He’s a plus athlete with plus size and a plus wingspan and a highly advanced handle. To me, the most important thing about him is he’s a multi-dimensional passer who is shown the ability to pick out players in a variety of scenarios. And I don’t think he’ll get put in a box as someone that has to just exist in the pick and roll, or her thrives in a fast paced or has to have the ball in his hands constantly.

He’s been pretty good as a connector and secondary playmaker quickly moving the ball when it hits his hands and keeping the possession going. But he’s also looked very comfortable in a James harden/Luca style heliocentric roll where everything comes from him getting to his spots and getting downhill.

He’s just an immensely talented player. The things that appear to be weaknesses right now don’t do nearly enough for me to view him as lesser than any of the other guard prospects in this class who all have some serious concerns and their own right. And between him Castle, who I really like, and Collier I find him to be the most entertaining and fun to watch player in addition to a high level offensive talent

To be fair, all of the guard prospects in this class could end up as career backups. Topics passing is the closest thing to an elite skill being possessed by any of the high ranked guard prospects. There’s a whole lot of guys that are good at several things but not necessarily great or projecting as elite in any one important NBA category. As of right now. It’s going to take some sizable improvement from any of these guys to become stars

  • It absolutely is. Pops even said that they’re barely even running plays for him yet. They’re going to wait until they’ve got enough film showing where he struggles and suces naturally without coach interference before they start. Trying to actually structure the roster, and a game plan, around him moving forward. It’s a smart plan considering they have no chance of making the playoffs anyway.

No people would much rather bash one of the greatest coaches of all time and wish for Victor to be catching an extra two to three lobs a game in places like Charlotte or Detroit, who, as we all know, have a storied recent history of developing stars…

  • Dejounte Murray, Derek White, and keldon Johnson were all drafted at 29. All three of them great between high level rotation player to borderline All-Star, to actual all-star. Devin Versailles drafted outside the top 10 and definitely goes top six in a redraft. Guys like Jones probably go borderline lottery and he was a second round pick.

Spurs consistently punch above their weight when it comes to draft talent and developing on heralded players and now they actually have a heavy heading draft selection to work with.

  • I know pop is being very careful with this minutes and having a strict no nonsense regiment with subbing him in and out, but if this team is going to win again anytime soon Victor’s going to have to stay in the game when he’s got it going and the team’s going to have to write him out at times. Doesn’t mean they have to make him play 40 minutes a night but some games. He’s going to have to be in there until he stops hitting shots or stops playing well. Continuing to pull him when he has it going in. The team is jealing is just a bad look and something. I really hope pop becomes more flexible with moving forward

  • I mean right now as far as things I think he genuinely needs to improve upon, and aren’t things that will just come with age naturally, is decision making on his drives, when to pass and went to maintain his dribble/ not dribble into traffic in the first place, and shot selection. That’s pretty much it.

Everything else I’ve seen evidence that if there’s a struggle involved in it, it’s either down to the Spurs current way in which they’re using him with very little structure, or simply because he’s 19 and barely into his first season

His jump shot has great form so I’m not too worried about his shooting as a whole, he already is grabbing nine rebounds of game, despite the fact that he very rarely even attempts to box out, both because of strength issues, but also because he’s very rarely in the paint and is often flying across from the perimeter to try to get boards, for every bad pass he makes. There’s usually at least two to three good ones, even if they don’t always lead to assists.

He’s frankly having an amazing season and people’s unrealistic expectations, combined with Chet. Having such an efficient year on a very good thunder team, are causing people to not fully appreciate how good he has been to start the year
