  • FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Robert Saleh is watching practice, Zach Wilson running team drills, and in the coach’s periphery, he hears a voice, someone talking through the play under his breath. Every play, the same voice. When Saleh finally turns his head, he sees Tim Boyle, running through the play as if he were a part of it.

“I’m just looking over and I’m like: Good for him,” Saleh said.

That was when Boyle was still just the New York Jets’ backup quarterback. There were no plans for him to start, not yet, at least. Wilson was locked in as the starter with Aaron Rodgers out.

But Boyle has been doing that in practice for most of his NFL career. It was the way he learned to stay ready as a backup, never knowing when (or if) he’d actually get his opportunity to take the field. He hasn’t had many of them in six NFL seasons since signing with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2018.

“That’s the weird part about being a backup. You don’t really get the reps at all during the week but I have to work through my process like I’m playing the games,” Boyle said Nov. 3. “Zach gets the physical reps so I gotta make sure I get the mental reps. It’s funny that (Saleh) notices. … I have a good process of hearing the play, pretending I’m in the huddle, spitting it out, and then seeing the defense and going through a mental plan of what I would do.”

Now Boyle will get a chance to show what he can do Friday against the Miami Dolphins. Saleh benched Wilson on Monday — for the third time dating back to last season — due to poor performance and in an attempt to give the Jets offense a shot in the arm. Boyle will replace Wilson as the starter. The Jets have a 4-6 record with one of the NFL’s best defenses — and one of its worst offenses. The unit ranks last in third-down conversions, red-zone conversions, 30th in yardage and 30th in scoring. Wilson wasn’t the only problem but he was a big part of it, ranking near the bottom of the league in most relevant statistics — including 37th of 38 eligible in EPA per dropback.

We’ve got a stellar cast of droppers, no one person to blame here:

    • Randall Cobb: 40% drop rate
    • Allen Lazard: 20% drop rate
    • Gipson: 16.7% drop rate
    • Hall: 11.4% drop rate
    • Ruckert: 11.1% drop rate
    • Uzomah: 11.1% drop rate

Garrett has a reasonable 6.6% drop rate, and Conklin has been a beast with a 0% drop rate.

Jets have 19 total drops on the season according to PFF.

  • Man, even if Rodgers didn’t get hurt week 1, there’s no way this team was going to win a superbowl with Lazard as the #2 WR and this offensive line. Maybe it’s for the best that we got to keep our first round pick and ensure we still have a way to retool for next year. (We need to jettison Hackett and Cobb, relegate Lazard to WR5 because we’re stuck with his contract, and let Rodgers know that we’re not catering our every move to him). Trade/release ZW.

Use the top 10 pick that we’re destined to get to trade down for a lower 1st and a 2nd – use both those picks on best available OL and WR. Also use the 3rd round pick on OL. Ignore defense this upcoming draft.

    2024 depth chart:

    • QB: Rodgers, [FA vet], day 3 draft pick
    • RB: Hall, Abanikanda, [FA vet], day 3 draft pick
    • WR: Wilson, [day 1 draft pick], [FA vet?], Gipson, Lazard
    • OL: Becton - Tomlinson - Tippman - AVT - Warren(?) … [day 1/2 draft pick AND day 2 pick waiting in the wings]
    • TE: Conklin, Ruckert, Uzomah

  • Just watched the Jets Media All 22 recap, and my goodness, Zach balled out. In real time, I thought he made 2 critical errors: airmailing Cook and the INT. On the film, the miss to Cook was actually tipped at the line of scrimmage, and it looks like the INT was supposed to be a 5 yard stick route…but by Lazard lazily drifting out to 7 yards, it provided space for Spillane to undercut. I also thought hitting Breece in the flat was obvious, but with Newman getting beat instantly, I don’t know how Zach was supposed to have time to look Lazard off and hit Breece without taking a brutal sack.

Zach’s clear mistakes: a couple of small misses to Garrett, and bombing it to Taylor instead of taking a 25 yard gainer to Lazard. He had a few other beautiful throws (like the clutch 3rd down completion to Gipson) wiped away by awful penalties (MC chop block).

    Other thoughts:

    • Breece may have had his worst game as a pro, he missed a couple of holes that would have been massive chunk plays
    • GW has to catch that bomb on the final drive, hits his chest before the safety gets there
    • OL run blocking is absolutely putrid - ZW moving the ball well despite no run game is impressive
    • Conklin is a beast
    • Lazard and CJ have to be phased out
