After the “hype train failure” thread blew up on here, let’s have some positivity! What games did you go in with negative expectations, only to get absolutely blown away? Were you a non-believer and a cynic? Or was everyone expecting a failure?

For me, it was Ghost of Tsushima. Despite the acclaim, I saw it as an Assassin’s Creed knock off and never bothered to play it. Plus I knew someone who’d complained about the side content, and I’d seen articles where people complained about the historical inaccuracies. Saw a copy someone had tossed in the bins (along with a few other games), ans gave it a go. Fell in love. Platinumed the game, couldn’t put it down. What a fool I was for not enjoying it sooner.

    Kid Icarus: Uprising

It was in the bargain bin at my local Wal-mart, and I didn’t know anything about it, had never heard of the series before. I just saw a cheap game at the time when I was trying to flesh out my 3DS library. I didn’t have high expectations, if I’d never heard of it, it couldn’t be that good, right?

Turned out to be one of my favourite games of all time.

Specifically the 3rd case of Ace Attorney: Duel Destinies. I knew the game didnt have its original creator on hand and they forced Phoenix back into protagonist roll when they really didnt need to so the game was at a big negative for me going in. First two cases were fine but nothing special. Third case legitimately surprised me with how good it was.

Absolutely hated the last case of the game but the third case deserves major props

    Resident evil 4 remake

I couldn’t imagine that they could top the original. But somehow they went above and beyond. Greatest remake game ever made

    Metal Gear Survive.

It’s easily the best zombie game I’ve ever played.

It was NOTHING like Metal Gear Solid and there was no reason it should have been a part of that IP. I totally understand why people hate it. MGS is all about stealth and being able to use dozens of tools and weapons, as an expert military agent.

In Metal Gear Survive, your tools are scarce and need to be placed carefully, and your character is just a guy. You need food and water and you don’t run very fast so it’s obviously annoying to deal with if you’re expecting to play as an action hero, but it’s amazing if you like slower paced, strategic use of your character.

Still, the re-use of MGSV maps and the microtransations and grinding were pathetic. But the core gamelay was actually genius and that alone makes the game an 8/10 for me.

Days Gone got bad attention at launch, and the idea of a biker zombie game seemed stupid to me.

Heard someone on a podcast I listen to say he really liked the game, and this particular person was the last person I’d expect to like a game like this.

Got it free on PS+ and thought it was lame for a good long while… but at some point, it subverted a major trope, which I appreciated, then opened up into a much more fun game than the first 10 hours made it out to be… and I wound up really enjoying it.

    Batman: Arkham Asylum.

When it came out, licensed games had been cheap cash grabs for years. I was expecting the same with this despite the praise it got and wound up loving it

Resident Evil 4 back in the PS2 days. I considered myself a purist in survival horror and just kept thinking “why are they making the enemies like pinatas? You shoot 'em and get ammo!”. When I finally gor around to playing it in 2006, I quickly swallowed my pride (and prejudice, hehehe).

Such a great time playing it with friends watching!

Valheim. I could never in my life get into survival/crafting games. Not even Minecraft. 240 hours later it’s among my top 5 of all time.

    Cyberpunk 2077

I’d seen all the shit that was posted online from the release version. I then played it on my cousin’s XBOX-S, and was fucking blown away.

Story, gameplay, world building, everything was perfect. I loved it so much to a point that I hated myself for loving it due to all the false advertisement they did about the game.

I’m yet to play the updated version.
