Here’s a question for one section of the online Steelers fanbase. In your opinion, how well does Twitter, Reddit, other popular haunts online represent the Steelers fanbase?

Through most of my experience, I’ve noticed that a large majority of the most vocal fans on Twitter do not in any way represent the way I feel about the ball club.

For instance, most seem infatuated with statistics and much less about winning. Others openly root for losses in order for better draft picks. Most get caught up in day-to-day narratives spun up by talking heads when I’m just over here trying to have a steady, even-keeled WINNING franchise.

Which is something a lot of these folks online seem to take for granted. I mean, I’d watch a player like Dan Kreider run the ball 30 times a game mixed in with accurate Josh Miller coffin corner punts if it meant we would win consistently.

So in summary, what are your thoughts on the online Steelers community and is it generally representative of your fandom?

    No. Not at all

I know LOTS of steelers fans. My extended family all hails from western PA and excluding a few black sheep Eagles fans, all of them support the steelers. Always something to bond over during thanksgiving and christmas

We usually go to at least one game each year. We still have friends in Pittsburgh that take us to tailgates. The game day environment is amazing and welcoming, even on bad days. Whole thing is just, very very fun.

This sub is where I get most of my steelers content and quite frankly, no one here is fun. Everyone here is angry and argumentative and unable to hear out others opinions. And I say “everyone” but its basically 6-7 power users that enter every thread to just yell their opinions at everyone. Its draining and its kinda why I go through cycles of spending time here, right now im on a lot but a lot of times I just need a break

Theres something about reddit in general where most of the commenters are obsessed with being the smartest people in the room and are often extremely arrogant about it, but truthfully most of the people on this website are pretty fucking stupid. Mind you, my friends and family can be too, but they arent so arrogant to think they have all the answers

I’d say not that well. Feel like all platforms (in regard to fans posting about the team) are largely ways for fans to vent their frustrations, so most of the time you have unmitigated doom-posting rather than more nuanced and measured takes that are more indicative of how the fanbase actually feels.

Prior to this year I would’ve said that the online Steeler threads are a vocal minority of the fan base. Hearing “Fire Canada” chants at both home and away games on the national broadcast makes me think most of us align on at least that point lol.
