I’ve tried to get a lot of friends into Overwatch but the main thing that puts them off wanting to play is not being able to play some of the heroes without grinding heaps/paying to unlock them.

In a game like Overwatch where team compositions/certain picks are sometimes crucial to winning games, *no* heroes should be locked. It is straight up not fair.
One team could lose a game for no other reason than they weren’t able to pick a certain hero when the other team was able to pick that hero.
Also, a bunch of heroes that I consider to be the best/crucial picks are locked. Kiriko for cleanse. Lifeweaver for mass heals. Rammatra for smashing through shields. *All* of these are locked.

With all of the major announcements they made at Blizzcon, it is insane that one of them wasn’t the removal of the locks on heroes.

*All heroes should be unlocked from the get-go, full stop.*

I think locking them in the battlepasses is okay, as you just get them early for paying

But once the pass is up, you should get them regardless of if you did it or not

I don’t think you should be hyping up team composition and counter switching that much to someone which doesn’t have the heroes to do those things. Let people learn how the heroes work then talk about that. If I lost a game when I started out and someone said “it’s not your fault, you just didn’t have the right heroes yet” that will just make me feel bad because I’m at a disadvantage. Not just because I’m already less skilled due to starting out but also because don’t have everything I supposedly need to do well. Take it slowly

Hard disagree, it’s f2p now, if anyone isn’t willing to put in the time to unlock the characters they don’t really want to dedicate the time this game takes to learn.

Back when the game wasn’t f2p you had more incentive to learn, that being the money you spent.

The whole paywall thing isn’t right either tho. You don’t actually need to pay any money in this game, you can get all heroes free just by playing their corresponding roles

And this game isn’t just counter picks, and you don’t even have any clue how overwatch counterpicks work til way after your first 150 games to unlock all base heroes. You can basically just play whatever’s fun and by the time you unlock competitive you have the characters unlocked for the most part.

I don’t wanna defend any form of monetization ever (like lemme pay for the game but no microtransactions) BUT when I started 6 months ago, I think it was good to have to play to unlock certain characters. You don’t want someone who is just picking up OW to show up as Genji. That’s not gonna be fun for them, definitely not fun for teammates. I think there’s some sense of logic in there where early on you get more conventional/lower skill floor heroes like Moira, Soldier, and you first encounter whackier stuff like Genji, Kiri etc. As enemies, and you slowly unlock them.

While OW is FPS it is very very unconventional. I now understand how the heroes work and understand that there’s a certain type of person that likes the Genjis and Junkrats of this game, but if my first 10 games were with Genji, I would probably think I’ll never be good at it and quit.

They unlock pretty quickly. It’s not really a long grind. I unlocked Rammatra, Sojourn, J-Queen, Kiriko, Lifeweaver, and Illari via the hero unlock challenges, and there’s definitely enough other heroes to thoroughly try out while you get that done.

New heroes definitely are fun to try though! I’ve familiarized myself with how to play every hero in the game, but new heroes do have a certain pop to them that make doing all the grinding for them worth it even if you don’t end up favoring them in the long run. For me, Rammatra became my favorite tank hero in the game, I play as Sojourn sometimes, Kiriko is probably my second favorite support hero now, with Lifeweaver being my third favorite. Unlocking them all was so worth it.

As someone new to game game, I kind of enjoyed heros being unlocked over a period of time, I didn’t feel so overwhelmed and everytime a new hero was unlocked, I always gave them a few plays.

I agree, even though you need to unlock champs in League or HOTS, it’s not the same because in those games, there are not hot-swapping, which is absolutely critical in some situations in Overwatch.
