From the article: “‘We are not scaling back plans for EVs in the U.S. market,’ said Reinhard Fischer, senior vice president and head of strategy at VW Group of America. Speaking at the Reuters Events Automotive USA 2023 conference in Detroit, Fischer said VW plans to build the under-$35,000 EV in the United States or Mexico.”
”VW also is looking at localizing assembly of battery packs for the under-$35,000 EV to qualify for additional incentives under the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act, Fischer said. The German automaker previously has announced plans to build battery cells in Canada for its current and future North American-built EVs.”

So 3-4 years to late
$35k in 2023 or 2027 money?
Neither lol.
The new Citroen C3 on sale next year already costs under $25,000, crazy how some companies like Toyota and Volkswagen are still treating EVs like a joke.
it already has two sub-$35k cars (ID3 & ID4), but it’s too busy trying to charge $50k to 60k for them!
The Bolt is the Pinto of EVs.
The ID4 is the Land Rover of EVs (death by 1000 cuts).
The state of EVs summarized
This is the biggest problem with all EVs. If I’m spending $60k for a car, why wouldn’t I just get the BMW, Mercedes, or Volvo? At least they make cars that look like they cost $60k.
I was planning on getting an Ionic 6. Then when I saw what it would actually cost from a dealer, I got a BMW i4 for the same price and comparable features. But instead of a Hyundai interior, I get a BMW interior.
The only BMW i4 that’s under $60k has sub-270 mile range and the 0-60 of a base model Chevy Bolt.
The fastest i4 (almost $70k) is slower than the base-model Model 3 or base-model EV6, both of which sell in the $38-$41k range.
There’s definitely tradeoffs and that’s A LOT to pay for “interior”.
i4 is super cool. lovely choice
