If this team were competently coached this year, they could easily be 7-3. A well coached team beats the Giants and Bears, probably beats the Seahawks today, and likely splits with the Eagles. Waiting so long to reshuffle the o line, and punting the MLB position have probably cost this team a playoff season. The team also comes out flat most weeks. You’re not trying to win if you replace Holcomb with Mayo. Mayo is a good MLB in 2002. He’s unplayable today. If the middle of the field is a liability then it’s harder on the entire defense. I know some folks here are talking about tanking, but the talent is here. A competentely coached Commanders team has 7 wins.
I am with you on this. We don’t need to rebuild. We need to try and draft a TE that can block and catch to give Sam a good safety valve and help the run game. Then go OL and defense for the rest of the draft. Use some of the money in FA to fry and get additional pieces and replace Jack and Ron with competent coaches and I really think we could make some noise. Seems like a ways to go full rebuild mode when you have a QB that is playing as well as Sam is.
I don’t think they need to rebuild, but the talent need to be re-evaluated by someone else that is not on the inside. Other words hire a really competent GM or Head of Football Operations.
They could also be 2-8. Hard to predict what changing multiple variables would generate but maybe that is what the analytics guy is working on.
I agree; I don’t think we need a total rebuild; we have some key pieces in place. I would like to see the new GM and coaching staff rebuild the offensive line, address the linebackers (we need speed and sure tacklers), find a new long snapper who doesn’t skip balls back to Tress and then add some depth at the DE and DB positions.
The talent is not here at the LB or CB position. JDR has done a poor job with this defense, to say the least. But the ceiling, with a better DC, is still not very high. I’m not defending JDR-- he needs to go. But that is not the magic pill that solves all the problems on this defense. There are still serious personnel gaps that need to be addressed.
I agree about the O-Line. They look so much better with Larsen at center and the fact that it took until almost November to figure that out, is a coaching problem. But that “re-shuffling”, while effective at elevating the O-Line from dumpster status, has not made them great by any means. They’ve gone from bottom of the league to slightly below average. A huge improvement but there is still work to be done.
Off-season priorities:
- New coaches
- Middle Linebacker
- Defensive backs
- Offensive Line
Perhaps you should submit your resume to the front office?
I’m not sure what to make of the downvotes.
You * should* submit your resume?
Yeah if we had a lot better players and coaches we could be 7-3, lol.
Ehh, I say we sweep the Eagles and beat the Seahawks but still lose to the Bears and Giants. That’s more realistic anyhow given how those games went, our offense really failed in New York. But if our defense doesn’t give up 29+ points every single week we’re the #2 seed in the NFC right behind Detroit.
Agreed. We can compete with anyone. We beat Philly if Ron challenged.
With that said 4-6 with a first year QB is not the worst. Pretty sure this is similar to Jalen’s 2021 for Philly.
