  • While I agree that our record would be better with Kirk, we’re just playing guessing games. The JJ injury was going to catch up with us eventually once defenses learned what our tendencies were without him and our O line has been leaky lately.

Dobbs has looked putrid at times but we had a lead late with a chance to put the game away the last 2 weeks. We could easily have gone 4-0 thanks to our great defensive play.

Let’s not forget that our defense was the main reason we won our first two games. Our offense was horrible against the bears the first time and the panthers.

Without our defense playing so well, we probably only have 2-3 wins at the most.

  • It’s hard to start 1-4 and be in the MVP discussion. I think it would have taken something like us running the table for the rest of the season which was pretty unlikely. We got back to 4-4 with him and he looked pretty good doing it but that’s all we can really say. If we were 6-2 or something and had beaten the chiefs or eagles as well then for sure I think Kirk would have been realistically in the race. Our schedule got really soft after the 49er game so that would have been used against him.

  • A lot of this depends on team building/cap implications. Our defense has been great with minimal investment and can be dominant with a few more above average pieces in free agency. For me next year’s QB would qualify in the following order of priority:

QB1 for me would be Kirk IF he signs for <30m/yr (QB2 Hall. Dobbs playing well could drive Kirk’s price down) that way we can have enough money to build the rest of the team to Super Bowl contention

QB1 would be Dobbs IF he signs <20m/yr AND takes this team to the playoffs (QB2 Hall). Kirk is better but the extra cap space carries more value especially if we are already a playoff team with Dobbs

QB1 would be Hall if neither of the above happen. QB2 is drafted next draft and buckle up

  • We can conceivably keep everyone with some contract gymnastics but we would be setting up for an eventual salary cap implosion a few years down the line.

We essentially did this with all the aging defensive stars of Zimmers defense and Cousins contracts to where all we could really do was rely on the draft to fill out a large part of the roster.

Coincidentally, this is the reason why GM’s are very hesitant giving too many players a lot of money because it is really difficult to continually hit in the draft rather than spend money on several serviceable free agents to fill a roster.

A rule of thumb I’ve followed for my own expectations is basically a rule of three:

You can pay top positional dollar to about 3 players on offense and 3 players on defense and have enough cap room to build a solid team as long as your day 1 and 2 draft selections aren’t all busts.

JJ and Is getting paid. We paid Hock top dollar. So by rule of 3 do you want Kirk or Darrisaw? Or you keep both and then you have less on the defensive side which brings its own issues
