  • Probably not. He hadn’t won there since 2008 and it’s not like he was losing to only Rafaole (in fact he never played Rafa there, lost to Nole 3 times post-2008) in those years. I think somebody would’ve probably got him at that point in his career, definitely Thiem would be the favorite if they met before the finals. If he somehow gets to the final then he probably would’ve beaten both Thiem and Zverev given they handled the moment horrifically and he’s an experienced champion but I doubt his ability to get to that final.

  • Carlos has two slams and a year end #1 and people are already saying he’s being replaced by Sinner and Rune… who have a grand total of one GS semifinal between them 😭

He’s clearly struggled slightly since Wimbledon but I think people should look at Nadals 2005-2007 years and Novaks 2008-2010 years and Federers pre-2003 years and realize they were losing a lot of matches besides to just each other as well and they weren’t winning every tournament they entered at 20 years old.

I’m kinda glad he had a relatively bad second half of the season tho cuz I do think he needs to work on his backhand in general as well as rally tolerance and shot selection and I think Becker and others saying things like this is gonna give him a lot of motivation (although I think he already has a lot of inner motivation already).

    1. Premise of post isn’t true. Every time he acts like this there are quite literally 8-10 posts that day about it with dozens of comments all saying similar things to “he needs to get help, this isn’t okay”. Check the day of his hubi loss in shanghai.

    2. He takes it out on himself for the most part (except for that incident yelling at the camera man). He isn’t usually yelling at the chair umpire, opponents, ball boys, fans etc he’s usually just destroying his own knees which while still unhealthy is less off-putting than punishing someone else for his frustration.

    3. Off the court he’s clearly a nice, fun, mild-mannered and well-liked guy who likes to joke around. he stays in lines for a long time signing autographs and taking pics for fans, fawns over his fellow players as well as jokes around with them a lot, is clever, charming and has a god self-deprecating humor in interviews etc. So it seems clear he’s not a bad guy off the court, unlike a lot of the guys who act badly on court who have similar asshole behavior off the court.

Like others I think you should get her tickets to the Indian Wells tournament in March (assuming you’re American). Make a 4 day trip of it or so, it’s known by fans and players alike for being a tennis paradise because of the facilities as well as the surrounding environment.

Choosing “things” like rackets, apparel, shoes etc is kind of risky because people can be very particular and like to pick that out themselves but a gift card to Tennis Warehouse or something would be too impersonal.

Also studies have shown that people usually say they look back and are happier with the money they spent on “experiences,” vs “things” so if you went with her I think it could be a memorable you both always look back on fondly.
