1. You don’t have to worry about one shots from widow or Hanzo, ever. Sure they’ll go for your team, but you can take riskier players knowing you won’t be deleted

  2. You can cancel or flat out tank most ultimates. Dva, Sigma, Orisa can eat or block most dps ults, rein can block, Zarya can cleanse, etc

  3. You have the ultimate with the most potential for team kills. That’s because most tank ults are for CCing or displacing the enemy so that your team gets the advantage, allowing for 1 ult team wipes

  4. You don’t really have to worry too much about picking off enemies yourself - your job is to make space (by literally taking it or by displacing the backline), and to peel for your team

Number 1 is voided by the fact that you’re the only one who can deal with them. Furthermore you’re obligated to deal with them and as such, you must swap against them.

So #1 is far from an upside.

No, you’re a dps main and a sombra main at that. I guarantee you do not play tank enough just by your first point, you see it mostly from the outside lookin in. Sure you may dabble in tank, but in no way do you really play tank. And id bet you just pull out orisa n call it a day 🤷‍♂️

I just think they need a little more tankyness. A bit more health and leaning a bit more into their niche (or lack there of) like, Zarya is fine, but replace her health with more shield health, bodybuilder or not she has basically zero armor. For reinhardt, lean into being a giant juggernaut. He has no gun, so to compensate his melee damage should be terrifying, so bump it up to 100, and his firestrike at 120 or something, along with drastically increasing the health of his shield (cause atm 1600 feels like holding up a shield made of paper). These are just suggestions, but that’s just my idea. They don’t need to be walking death machines, but they do need to be scary enough to discourage being challenged alone.

I don’t think any of these upsides are unique to Tank. Positioning and routing helps with Widow and Hanzo.

Many supports can shut down ultimates entirely. Some DPS heroes have ways to shut down ultimates, not including just deleting the hero ulting.

Tanks have to be very careful about all their plays because the entire team at a minimum is keeping an eye on the tank, if not shooting them.

Tanks still need to worry about dealing damage and trying to pick off the enemy. They just also have multiple other jobs, some of which the player base just auto assumes the tank will do (peeling) even though it can be done by anyone. The change to 5v5 actually put pressure on the rest of the team, not just the solo tank, to also pick up the “off-tank” duties from OW1. The community is still learning this on the whole, especially lower ranks. Supports should be peeling for each other and DPS should also be helping in some scenarios. Too many people assume the tank is the only one that can peel.

The real upsides to playing tank, imo, are in the fun of the heroes kits and the variety. Also you are the typically the giant target so the enemy and your supps alike will tend to focus you. This can be quite exhilarating. Tanks have some of the most flashy and fun ultimates, even if they end up doing nothing sometimes. Also, Rein duels and Ball mirrors are a treat.

Most carry potential for sure. Rein can clean up teams. It’s my highest SR and the role I enjoy the most.

Because those upsides dont outweigh your team bullying you for playing literally any tank

    1. A widow headshot on tank can cause huge damage and Hanzo can absolutely wipe out tanks even if its not on one shot. And why would you want to even concede damage ideally when it gives ult charge to the enemy.
    2. DPS like reaper, mei, etc can all escape ultimates as can almost all of the supports. So what.
    3. In high rank plays, overclock and captive sun have far more kill potential than any tank ultimate. Infact a lot of the times you will Sigma will ult to get one kill and more importantly use it to get to high ground. Dva’s ult is mostly used for re-meching, Doom’s ult is to run back to his team.
    4. lol

Tank is a great role and very fun. It’s the easiest role in the game and every single character is unique and great in their own way. DVA particularly is one of my favourites and Ball if I’m in open queue (I would never inflict solo tank ball on a team lol). I only ever really play it on flex or if I’m getting spanked in dps queue.

It really seems like tank mains are just perpetual whiners forever switching their target of ire to various supports because they don’t understand their role. It is the easiest, least mechanically demanding role in the game. It doesn’t require the awareness and game sense of support, and it doesn’t require the outright skill of dps. It’s literally a role you succeed in by not having an ego. Which is why here on reddit you see the tanks not having fun lashing out blaming everyone else “it’s zen orb it makes it too hard” “it’s ana! I can’t mindlessly walk in while she has cooldown!” so on and so on. It’s cringe, if they hate it so much they should branch out and realize that literally every other role is way more difficult.

The only frustrating thing on tank is that you can end up very reliant on your support and sometimes they just don’t exist, but I think every role has a role they lean on (DPS on tanks to make space, Support on DPS to kill things, Tank on support to stay upright) but it’s also a wildly fun and easy role. You just Rock-Paper-Scissors with the other tank (or not if they pick doomfist) and go in waves of aggression. Two corner at a time rule. Half the time you can even steer the enemy teams choices. I’ve gotten so far by starting every game as reinhardt, because I know as soon as I fuck them up they’ll switch to bastion etc, to which I can use sigma, then forcing them into orisa most of the time, to which I can just orisa also and effectively cancel their counterpicks. That is fun!

People say “oh you can’t get into GM by just counter picking” maybe not, but I certainly couldn’t climb consistently as easily in any other role. Like damn Frog? Mercy? the effort going through those custom games perfecting those role outs and boops was insane! and that was just to claw into high diamond. I have never even encountered a custom for training tank play, I imagine doomfist probably has some sort of parkour but I can’t imagine a rein custom lol.

Also best thing about tank? INSTANT QUEUE TIMES. Also just ignoring the duel when someone has the same pick as you and walking past them killing their team is always hilarious. It’s fun goddamnit, it’s a fun role

Yeah, tank definitely has its downsides but the “you rely on support and dps to help you” reasoning doesn’t make sense to me. Everyone relies on everyone, it’s a team game.
