Is it considered rebuilding if you never built?
1-while there is fan apathy right now, Metro Detroit is still a very large TV market and we are a storied franchise. NBA wouldn’t let the team move.
2-the next move for the NBA is expansion. Vegas and Seattle are almost certainly getting expansion teams in the next 2-5 years.
That’s wild actually, I’ve never looked at that list until you said that. Bubble AD could maybe be argued but he was 1a/1b with Lebron. Kyrie was a 2nd option. Wiggins was 3rd best on that golden state team. Dwight and Bogut won as role players. No one else has a chip.
Yeah Ausar as is could be Draymond-ish. All-NBA player next to Steph, role player/bench guy without Steph. He does so many incredible things on the court, but needs to be in the right situation. That being said, it’s 17 games into his career. Wouldn’t be shocked to see the shooting improve, if he can just get to 30% he will be fine
I know, my point is that the protected pick isn’t valuable to NY. which is why I think it’s a reasonable trade. It’s significantly more valuable to us than it is to them
The Knicks deal really isn’t giving up a first round pick. The way we are trending, best case scenario is it’s maybe like the 10th overall pick in 2027 but very well could be 2nd rounders. Not super valuable
Saints are the team in my mind. Consistent playoff team the last 5-7 years but never really a Super Bowl ceiling, never hit the full reset button so now have a weird roster with some good young talent but a lot of aging vets, and a middle tier QB. Need to just accept it and go full reset with a young QB this off-season and trading some vets, can probably get back into contention quickly if they hit on the right QB
This isn’t the NBA where you need top 5 picks multiple years in a row to build a contender. Mahomes was a 10th overall pick. Josh Allen 7th overall pick. Lamar 32nd pick. Jalen Hurts a second rounder. We won a Super Bowl with a 3rd round QB. Teams get “stuck” in the middle class in the NFL when they are overly committed to mid QBs. If we don’t see the FO make a move for a rookie QB this year, we can worry. But there is good young talent at premium positions on this roster, and solid vets that can be moved for additional draft capital. We aren’t “Mired” anywhere, this is a bad take
All the nerds are going to point to efficiency and true shooting and blah blah blah. Don’t care. Cade is the dude and it’s just a matter of time. The flashes are there, the consistency will come. As him and Ivey play together more this year, both guys will take a leap
The optimistic part of me says if Bogey gets healthy and has a good few months, he gets it done at the deadline. Knicks could really use a 4 who can space reliably in the playoffs, as Randle has been so up and down. And I’m not sure what value that pick has since at this point, it’s trending towards just being 2 2nds or BEST case, maybe the 10th pick in 2027. I think minimum Bogey+Burks or Monte get it done at the deadline for sure
Because it hampers our ability to make trades, since we can’t deal any picks until after the protections expire. We don’t need more young players, we need the ability to make a trade for a proven star when the time is right
The risk with a Lauri trade is he is 100% entering free agency unless he makes all-NBA and is Supermax eligible. Any extension can only be 40% higher so would cap around $25m per year. He will easily get a max as a free agent. Coupled with the fact that it will have to be a draft day deal with our first rounder + probably Ivey, it’s a super risky move for a guy who could walk after a year
First step is call NY to get the rights to our pick back. See if Burks + Bogey will get it done. this season is a wash and we need the rights to our future picks. Cade, Ivey, Ausar, Duren is the core. Gotta be ready to overpay for the right star when he gets unhappy and requests a trade
This sub insanely overvalues all of our players. Fields has more value than Geno purely on potential. If the FO doesn’t like the draft options at our pick, Fields isn’t a bad flier to take. He’s literally never been in a good situation at Chicago. Gotta have a coordinator willing to lean into his skillset though
If we got two firsts for DK, we’d be stupid not to trade him. Getting the AJ brown deal is probably best case scenario, a first and a fourth, and even that might be a stretch. I think most teams would rather just take a rookie receiver with the 1st round pick we would want in return
It’s a terrible signal to the next GM if we fire Weaver now, it would speak to massive dysfunction in the org. He just got extended and then Gores all of a sudden loses complete trust in him? It’s already public knowledge that Gores went over his head in the coaching hire (for better or worse). I don’t see any reputable candidate wanting to walk into that situation where at any moment the owner could turn on him/take decisions out of his hands/etc. There is good reason to be skeptical of Weaver but gotta at least play the year out first if only for the optics for the next guy
You don’t want your GM making short sighted decisions based on a need to “prove it”. That’s how you end up with crappy Blake Griffin trades. He can still be fired at any time, it’s not like it counts against our cap or anything
Releasing the protections with how bad we are is a really bad idea, considering we’d be giving up a top 5 pick. The better option, something they should have done last year IMO, was offering up Bogey to get the rights to the pick back. It’s not likely to convey anytime soon, I think NY would rather have a player to help right now vs what is shaping up to be 2 2nds years from now
Give Cade 6 more FTA’s per game and these stats start to come up significantly, especially the shooting % in the paint. I hate that the league rewards foul merchants but you gotta play the game unfortunately. He’s gotta look for fouls more consistently for us to win games, even if it’s not pretty at times
Trades take two sides. Just because our season is in hell doesn’t mean other potential aren’t still seeing what they have on their teams. Earliest I expect any deal done is after the Dec deadline when newly signed players can be traded since it just opens up more possibilities
