Haven’t seen this topic discussed too often, curious on everyone’s thoughts. IMO the big issue is subpar player development. It seems like we draft players that just end up plateauing after a year or two. When was the last time we drafted a player who far exceeded their expectations? The teams that come to mind that stand out in this area in recent years would be OKC, Spurs and Golden State. I’m referring to players that make you say to yourself, “I didn’t see him becoming that good coming out the draft”.
This all goes back to team building - How the fuck are players going to develop with what is going on around them on the court? This team is so devoid of talent that it just cannot happen.
Cade for the majority in his career has shared a backcourt with a dude who is notorious for being (whether it’s true or not) literally the worst player in the NBA.
Ausar Thompson plays legitimate minutes next to the biggest draft bust since Anthony Bennett in James Wiseman.
Jaden Ivey comes off the bench until these last 2 games and gets tasked with making shit happen next to the likes of Stanley Umude or Isaiah Livers.
No young player in the NBA sans a Luka level, generational talent could ever develop under these conditions
Part of helping players grow is putting them into positions where they can thrive & succeed. In my opinion, this is easier when you have some bonafide NBA vets that can shoot & play defense blended in with our crop of 7-8 20-22 year olds.
To start the year we looked a totally different team simply by having Alec Burks play at a high level. Since his injury he’s been horrible. Some player development is down to the players themselves but the organization hasn’t done our young guys any favors either in how they’ve constructed this roster.
I think this comes back to not putting them in good spots, with good vet players. Senguin looks like a stud, is it just a coincidence or because they brought in some adults for him to play with? Year ne of Weaver we competed, Bey looked a lot better than any other year here- because we had Plumlee and Grant starting with him. We took on dead body of Harris instead of a good, starting vet in his prime because we wanted to “see what we had”. Who the fuck didnt know what we had? Who didnt know Stew is/was a backup?
Not enough adults on the team. Most rotations wouldn’t dare start more than 1 or 2 players with as little experience as our starting 5 has and that’s for a reason.
People have been hating on him recently, but Beef Stew is the only guy on the roster who I would say has tangibly improved each year. He’s our best 3 point shooter in the starting lineup 😅
