  • I wish the Saints were doing better with him, yes…but I dont see where you look at today’s game and put it on Carr. The Lions scored 3 times early, but Carr got them back within 3 points before he got knocked out. Playing strong from behind while the defense keeps failing to do their part is pretty much the same thing that happened to him with the Raiders, so it doesnt really change the narrative about him at all.

  • I’m on board with him as HC, with two important provisos:

    • He actually wants to work with AOC or a QB we can get in the draft without trading too far up. The reason he did so well the first time is because he really wanted to work with Carr and got the best out of him, but we’re not going to get that band back together now. I wouldnt want him to come back here purely as a rehab assignment, without thinking he can win with the core people we have.

    • He agrees to let the GM do his job and stay out of the war room on draft day. He can give input and preferences, but does not have veto power on personnel decisions.

  • At this point its all academic. We already fired our HC, we dont have any other realistic long-term options at QB. So we’re rolling with AP+AOC, hell or high water, through the end of the year.

That means we’re going to see a full body of work on them both before any decisions are made. There is zero point to trying to make any kind of final decisions on them already. That’s a conversation for January.

All we really need to do now is look at the trajectory we’re going in. Right now its steadily improving, which is what you’d want to see at this point. Still a lot of mistakes at QB and bad coaching decisions, but all that needs to happen is those get less and less egregious each week, and they are. AOC’s numbers are good, he’s building rapport with his receivers, and seeing the field better and better. AP is learning how to make adjustments, manage the clock (still lots of room for improvement there), and strike the right balance of aggression and prudence, as the game situation dictates.

Unless we start backsliding and getting blown out and thoroughly outplayed, I dont think there’s a realistic complaint about their production right now

The bye week is going to be a big indicator of how the coaching staff reacts, too. We know he’s going to rally the troops, but we’ll see how much better the team looks with an extra week to prep for MIN.

Its kinda hate inasmuch as its unfair to judge him in toto right now when he’s still developing, with only a couple actual starts on his resume. Saying the mistakes he’s making now define who he’s going to be forever is simply not true.

If by the end of the season he’s still making the same mistakes and not showing any growth, then you can start to make those criticisms. But almost no one is going to immediately jump in and be an NFL QB1 right out of the box, in the scenario he was in

    People are just frustrated

Realistically, its not even a question. We’re not going back to Garoppolo this season, unless AOC gets injured. We’re not pulling a Browns and signing a Joe Flacco in desperation either. AOC will get to the end of the season to audition for the starting role next year. So he’ll either show steady growth, or he wont, and we dont have any decisions to make one way or the other till next spring

  • This game felt like the second season of the Gruden rebuild, when we kept looking competitive but just couldn’t pull out the close wins

The first half of this year it looked like we regressed all the way back to 2005 or so…so the fact that we’ve recovered and only lost that much progress is a good thing

  • You can tell AOC is still a rookie. Those deep shots seem like they were decided before the snap, and he was going to take them because it was “time to” and “he should”, rather than reading the play and seeing a decent chance.

Throwing it up for grabs and trusting Davante to get it is a fine strategy, but this wasnt the last play of the game, and there were options open shallower that would’ve kept the drive going and set up more shots for the end zone.

Hopefully going over this game tape will help AOC develop some better instincts for similar situations in the future. I think he’s made a lot of good adjustments and learned from his mistakes so far, especially with his pocket presence.

The overthrows are just inexcusable though. He’s gotta get on the same page with Adams about those kind of routes
