To be clear: I am NOT in favor of doing this. I just think, depending on where they are picking, who is available, and who is running the draft there is are several very real scenarios where they could convince themselves that it makes sense. Even if Belichick is out when the draft rolls around, are we SURE that whoever the GM is will be able to pass on some deal similar to what the Bears got last year?
Consider this scenario: Patriots are sitting there at #3. Williams goes #1, MHJ goes #2… and a team like Arizona comes along and offers pick #5-7, a 1st next year and a legit player, say like a Budda Baker. Or maybe they offer something even crazier like #5-7, a 3rd, and Kyler Murray. Might be hard to pass up on a deal like that given how many needs the team has, especially if it’s a situation where they’re getting a whole lot in return just for moving down a few spots in the draft.
Again, I’m not advocating for this, I’m just saying that I do think it’s a real possibility and am wondering: would you be upset if they passed on a top 3 pick? Is there another trade scenario you can think of that would make you consider doing this?
If they have a chance to draft Maye and don’t I will stop watching the patriots and just watch college until there’s a new gm.
I think I’m exaggerating but I don’t really know
I’ve thought about this too.
I don’t believe they would consider a trade if Maye or Williams is still on the board, but if those two go 1-2, I can imaging the Patriots trading down to the 5-7 range, where they would be assured one of Harrison, Fashanu, or Alt PLUS a second.
I actually said this a few days ago & people weren’t happy but you’re right. The way this organization is ran & has trained this fanbase, we’ll convince ourselves that this is actually a smart move. I hope they don’t but I would not be surprised if they do.
If they finish without a top 3 pick and Bill is still here, I could see them trading down.
They can’t trade out of a top 3 pick though. Kraft wouldn’t allow it. The fans would revolt.
would you be upset if they passed on a top 3 pick?
Yes. This team needs true impact talent. Worry about the the depth once you have some actual foundational pieces.
I hear that and also think this all depends on who is drafting for the Pats in 2024. I would like to believe it’s not going to Belichick. On paper I’m fine with trading down for a huge haul but I have little confidence Belichick won’t waste the precious top 100 picks by getting too cute.
There are so many variables to consider, but no matter what, I’m already prepping for a major disappointment. The neglect of roster building for the last 3 years has created so many interconnected areas of need that even a perfect draft and FA won’t be able to address even half of them.
Agreed. They need to be looking at the next two years as building years, not just this coming offseason. WR, Edge, OT, TE are all going to be major areas of need (their current 2024 roster is literally empty at TE and OT) with lesser but still required depth needs at CB and RB. They’ll also need to figure out safety long-term as well, not sure Duggar is the long-term answer at FS. SS absolutely, but he still looks lost at times in coverage. Some teams definitely still target him in the red zone.
Never be surprised about reading back if it’s Belichick. He loves a billion round 4 picks.
You shut your mouth.
If Arizona are trading up to three and MHJr has already been drafted then the only reason they do that is for a QB. At which point they would be trading Kyler because you aren’t gonna have two number one overall QBs under 26 on the same roster.
Teams moving up to draft a QB usually have to pay a huge haul to get up higher enough to draft a potential franchise QB. Likely two 1sts and a second in addition to the first rounder they are moving up from. Think SF when they traded with Miami to select Lance.
If we trade back it has to be for a haul and preferably draft picks not players. Unless they are either actually a position of need, good, healthy and on their rookie deals or are just “free with purchase.”
Like I’m not really interested in cornerstone pieces of the deal being reclamation projects like Lance, Love or Fields. I’m not interested in taking on someone who is 27+ who is already going to be starting to decline by the time we’re done rebuilding and I’m not interested in someone with a massive contract or with serious injury concerns.
Considering Bill will still be coaching I expect this. Or we draft a special teamer from D3
I wouldnt mind it, we are like 2-3 years away from contending no matter who we pick
28 is not old for an elite safety. Mccourty played until he was 35 and was a top 10 safety the entire time. You can’t have an entire secondary of 24 year olds.
